The Northeast Kingdom Cancer Action Network (NEKCAN) provides direct financial support to individuals in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom who are battling cancer. By easing the financial strain of treatment, NEKCAN helps patients and their families focus on what matters most—healing. From the beginning, Barrett Insurance Agency—co-owned by Mike and Jenn Barrett—recognized the importance of this mission and stepped up as a key partner.
“For both myself and my wife, Jenn, supporting NEKCAN is deeply personal. This work honors my mom, Jenny, and her battle with ovarian cancer, while ensuring support stays in the community we love,” said Mike Barrett, agency co-principal. “As a family-owned agency, we’re proud to provide both a home base and the volunteer energy needed to get funds directly into our neighbors’ hands.”
Barrett Insurance supports NEKCAN year-round through financial contributions, in-kind space, and hands-on leadership. Mike is a founding board member and current president, contributing across all aspects of the organization—from managing the website and designing event materials to overseeing applications, sponsorships, and often serving as emcee at events.
The agency also provides office space for board meetings and storage, helping NEKCAN operate with minimal overhead as it continues to grow. The purchase of their office building aligned with NEKCAN’s founding, allowing the organization to function efficiently while directing more funds to those in need.
A $10,000 Make More Happen Award would provide immediate financial relief to local cancer patients, helping cover essential expenses such as travel to treatment, fuel, lodging, utilities, and groceries—allowing families to focus on recovery instead of financial stress.
